How Lockdown Changed My Life: The Lessons, Challenges, and Unforgettable Companionship of My Cat Theo

The COVID-19 pandemic, and the months of lockdown it brought, is something that shaped us all in ways we couldn’t have imagined. It disrupted daily routines, altered professional and social interactions, and isolated us from friends and family. Like many, I found myself navigating a completely new life rhythm, wrestling with uncertainty, and at times, loneliness. And given that my partner was one of the few people in Italy allowed to work from the office (being employed by a company delivering primary services for the national infrastructure), there was one constant source of joy and comfort that helped me navigate these strange times: my cat, Theo.

I want to preface this article by saying that on February 5th, 2020, I stopped at the grocery shop near my apartment on my way back home from my business trip to Athens, which would be the second to last before the first Italian COVID-19 lockdown. There, in the parking area of the grocery shop, I found a little straw cat, full black, starving and freezing. .. and showing a pretty upset eye-looking.

In this post, I’ll dive into the widespread impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown—from emotional well-being to lifestyle changes—and share how Theo became an irreplaceable part of my pandemic experience, helping me find comfort and joy in a new routine even in the most uncertain days.

The Unexpected Impacts of the COVID-19 Lockdown

When the world came to a standstill, we all faced challenges that varied in scale and form. Here are some key areas where the lockdown had a profound impact:

1. Mental Health and Emotional Well-being

Isolation can have a huge effect on mental health, and many people felt it acutely during lockdown. Humans are social creatures by nature, and the sudden restriction on our ability to connect was emotionally taxing. Anxiety levels spiked, and with limited access to outdoor spaces and social gatherings, many faced loneliness and even depression.

The lockdown led to:

  • Increased levels of anxiety and stress
  • A rise in cases of depression, especially among people who lived alone
  • An emerging awareness of the importance of mental health

Like many, I felt the pinch of these mental health struggles, and it was during this time that I became truly grateful for the calming presence of Theo. He provided a sense of routine and emotional support that helped me stay grounded, even when the outside world felt chaotic.

2. Work-from-Home Culture and the Shifting Professional Landscape

For millions of people, home became the new workplace. Adjusting to remote work brought a whole new set of challenges, such as maintaining productivity from home, dealing with endless video meetings, and struggling to balance work and personal life when there was no physical separation between the two.

While this new normal had its perks—like skipping commutes and being close to loved ones—it also blurred the lines between work and relaxation. Burnout became a real issue, and many felt the need to overcompensate for their absence from the office.

For me, shifting from taking almost a hundred flights a year to being gently forced to sit on my chair (very comfy, expensive, and professional) in a small room of my home office was unexpectedly impactful. Theo became an unexpected coworker, often making cameos in my virtual meetings or sitting on my keyboard when I was deep in thought. His quirky interruptions were not only adorable but also reminded me to take necessary breaks and lighten up on an otherwise monotonous day.

3. A Shift in Lifestyle and Hobbies

The lockdown forced us all to slow down, often taking up hobbies that would help fill the quiet moments at home. Some people turned to baking, others took up painting, and a lot of us started spending more time outside, appreciating simple things like walks in the park.

With Theo by my side, I explored new ways to pass the time, often incorporating him into my activities. We would “read” together (him sleeping on the book I was reading), cook and bake, play Lego Technics in a very professional fashion, code using the latest and greatest from the software development space, and I took to photographing his various napping spots around the house. His presence was a wonderful reminder that sometimes slowing down and enjoying the moment is exactly what you need.

The Healing Power of Companionship: Theo’s Role During Lockdown

While the pandemic changed a lot, one of the most heartwarming constants was Theo. Through his small but significant actions, Theo proved to be more than a pet; he was my companion and therapist, helping me navigate the ups and downs of lockdown life.

1. Providing Unconditional Comfort and Routine

Theo quickly became the anchor in my day. Every morning, he’d wait patiently for me to wake up, his big, bright eyes and soft purring immediately lifting my mood. He was always there, reminding me to take breaks, move around, and stay grounded.

Cats, like Theo, are creatures of habit, and his daily routines became mine as well. Feeding him, playing with him, and even just watching him enjoy his naps gave me a purpose each day, something to look forward to in a time where so much felt unpredictable.

2. Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Studies have shown that spending time with animals can help reduce stress levels, and this was definitely the case with Theo. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, he’d seem to sense it, curling up beside me or nudging my hand as if to remind me I wasn’t alone. His calm presence was incredibly soothing; his little head bumps and soft purrs worked wonders to bring down my anxiety and help me refocus.

3. Adding Humor and Lightness to Everyday Life

Theo had a knack for making me laugh, something I didn’t realize I needed as much as I did. From chasing his tail to dramatic stares from the windowsill, Theo’s playful antics added a welcome dose of humor to the days that felt endless. He’d make surprise appearances on video calls, “help” me type emails, and entertain me with his endless fascination for cardboard boxes. His quirks reminded me to find joy in the little things, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

Lessons Learned: What Theo and the Pandemic Taught Me

Reflecting on my time in lockdown with Theo, I’ve come to appreciate the small lessons that emerged from an otherwise challenging time:

  1. The Importance of Companionship: Theo’s presence showed me the profound impact a companion—whether human or furry—can have on our well-being.
  2. Mindfulness and Slowing Down: Spending more time at home gave me a chance to appreciate a slower pace, and Theo’s relaxed approach to life encouraged me to do the same.
  3. Resilience in the Face of Change: The world may have felt turned upside down, but Theo taught me resilience through his unchanging affection and routine. This experience reminded me that even in moments of uncertainty, there’s comfort to be found in the constants around us.

Moving Forward

As we look to the future and adapt to life post-pandemic, I hold onto the memories and lessons from lockdown and Theo’s companionship. Theo reminded me to embrace the present, seek joy in the small things, and value the connections we have. For many of us, this period underscored the importance of mental health, the benefits of slowing down, and the value of shared moments, even if it’s just with a furry friend.

If there’s one thing I’ll always remember from this time, it’s that comfort and connection can come in the most unexpected forms. Theo may be “just a cat” to some, but to me, he was a lifeline, a companion, and a reminder that we can find resilience, joy, and laughter even in the most challenging of times.
